Cwmpalis and the Woods.

Old Oak Barn is surrounded by fields and woodland and is a unique place to stay at any time of the year. It is only a short walk up the track to the 40 acres of woods near Old Oak Barn. Guests have the use of our old log cabin in the woods where facilities are primitive! You can just see the sea at Laugharne form here.  Welcome to Bar BQ in style. The third photo shows a little squirrel enjoying herself this Easter.

I saw two pairs of long tailed tits January 28th 2008 in a tree making wonderful noises now the rain has gone - also spotted blue tits flying in and out of the nesting box by the barn! April 2008 Greylag Goose is nesting again and this year a pair of Canada Geese are also around. Swallows have bred successfully again and the resident woodpeckers have raised at least 3 this summer.

A friend Colin completed a detailed bird count in April 2005.  If you would like the details please email. The list of 47 species of birds spotted include the following:- Red Kite - Sparrow Hawk - Buzzard - Wren - Chiff Chaff - Blackbird - Robin - Blue Tit - Marsh Tit - Great Tit - Coal Tit - Long Tailed Tit - Song Thrush - Mistle Thrush - Wood Pigeon - Chaffinch - Dunnock - Nuthatch - Raven - Black Cap - Jay - Pied Wagtail - Greater Spotted Woodpecker - Goldcrest - Woodcock - Greenfinch - Magpie - Pheasant - Goldfinch - Herring Gull - Redwing - Moorhen - Field Fare - Treecreeper - Bullfinch - Willow Warbler - House Sparrow - Canada Geese - Jackdaws - Ferral Pigeon -Grey Herons - Black Headed Gull - Lesser Black Backed Gull - Greylag Geese - Mallards

A lot of the wood used in Old Oak Barn came from our own woods which are managed in a fully sustainable way. Jerry did all the harvesting and preparation himself and the time scale from living trees to being fully in use in the barn was only a matter of months. Wherever possible other building materials used were sourced locally eg stone from our own small quarry here at Cwmpalis and recycled slates from St Clears.
